Grouping is how designers keep complex layouts sane. A logo lockup, a button made of a shape plus text, a badge with three parts — group them and they move, stack, and align as one unit instead of a fragile pile of separate layers. The Group Elements tool bundles any layers into a group and, just as importantly, releases them again whenever you need.
The group mode takes a checkbox multi-select: tick two or more layers and they become a single group layer with its own ID, sitting on top of the stack. Nothing inside is flattened or altered — every member keeps its own fill, text, and position. Ungroup mode reverses the process exactly, dissolving a group back into its individual layers.
Grouping pairs naturally with the alignment tools: align a headline and its underline perfectly, then group them so the arrangement survives every later edit. It is fully reversible at any time — no commitment, no lost work.
How it works
To group: choose the design, tick at least two layer checkboxes, and click Group elements. The new group gets its own ID.
To ungroup: choose the design, pick the group layer from the dropdown (it lists only groups), and click Ungroup.
Members return to individual layers with all their original properties intact.
The result card confirms the group ID or how many elements were released; the preview re-renders either way.
Tips
Align layers first, then group them — the perfect arrangement stays perfect while you move it.
Use groups for reusable lockups like logo + tagline or button shape + label.
Ungroup anytime to tweak one member, then regroup — nothing is lost.
What it costs
Free on this site — and it can't be metered. Group & Ungroup Elements uses no AI and runs entirely in your browser: no usage counters, nothing sent to our servers to bill. When credit metering arrives in the app, local operations like this one will never consume AI credits — only server-side AI generations will.
Frequently asked questions
How many layers can I group?
At least two. A group of one is meaningless — the tool asks for two or more valid layers and tells you how many it found if some IDs are missing.
Does grouping change my layers?
Nothing inside is flattened or changed. The group is a wrapper that moves and stacks as one unit; ungrouping releases every member back to its original individual-layer state.
How do I see what's inside a group?
Groups appear in the layer stack as a single layer with their member count, like group#ab12 (3 items). The full photoaicompany editor can select members inside; on this site you can reorder the group as a unit or ungroup it.
Can I group text and shapes together?
Yes — group the logo and tagline once, then the whole lockup moves as one layer everywhere you reuse it.

Group & Ungroup Elements techniques that look professional
Four field-tested techniques, each shown on real photography. Steal them all.
Design the system, not the page.Styles, spacing, and components that repeat become a language — speak it fluently. Inside Group & Ungroup Elements, this single habit pays off fast.
White space is a material.Treat empty space like ink — spend it deliberately, not as leftover. This is doubly true when the job is Group & Ungroup Elements.
Compare against the best, not the average.Measure your work against the feeds you admire — comfort with average is the real competitor. Group & Ungroup Elements rewards this discipline more than most tools do.
Document the decisions.Note why the palette, type, and layout were chosen — future-you inherits the reasoning. Make it part of your Group & Ungroup Elements routine.
Avoid the traps
Three mistakes to avoid with Group & Ungroup Elements
✕
Everything emphasized
Bold, color, size, and underline on the same words cancel each other out. Fix: pick one emphasis per element.
✕
Text touching the edges
Copy crammed against the canvas edge feels accidental. Fix: give every text block breathing room — margins are free.
✕
Five fonts in one design
Every extra typeface dilutes the message. Fix: one family, up to three weights — restraint reads as confidence.
